‘Il canto di Ulisse’ / ‘The Canto of Ulysses’ is one of the most commented and studied chapters, at the heart of Primo Levi’s first and most important book, Se questo è un uomo / If This is a Man. This means that critical readings and analyses of the chapter are to be found in almost every scholarly work on the book, and in most writings on Levi’s work as a whole.
The field is potentially vast. Here we are offering a short bibliography of key critical studies that focus primary or substantially on the chapter itself, drawing on some of the key references included in our collective commentary on the chapter on this site and on other sources.
The field has, inevitably, looked above all at relations between Levi, Auschwitz, and Dante in the chapter; but, as our commentary shows, the chapter opens up many directions for analysis and creative response, through the rapport between Levi and Jean – ‘il Pikolo’ – through dynamics of memory, language, and translation, and many other facets that remain to be explored.
